Hello. You have somehow wandered over into this little corner of the internet and wondering what you’re reading, I suppose. Allow me to introduce myself.
I’m Jen. I’m an Australian living in the US, formerly an academic and geographer. I now I spend my days chasing two small children. I have been a shitty housewife since my first child was born in 2017 (in fairness, I don’t actually think I’m THAT shitty because my children are both fed and bathed on a regular basis, but I’m all about managing expectations). And in 2019, I started a spreadsheet to track every cent our family spends on food. Then instead of letting all of that fabulous data go to waste, we wrote a newsletter analysing our food spending instead of sending holiday cards that year and have done so ever since. See: 2022, 2021, 2020, and 2019.
In March 2023 we started some renovations and lost access to our kitchen, a state that is expected to last about nine months. I turned our annual newsletter into a digital and more regular affair to document our eating and food spending during the process. We have a kitchen again now but I kept writing.
Stick around if you want to read more of my grocery observations, food expenditure data, random thoughts about the differences between Australia and the US, and any other random thing that takes my fancy on the day I happen to be writing the newsletter. Or don’t, that’s okay too.
